From 2 to 15 of August in Nikel 27 volunteers from 10 Russian cities transformed the space along the Kolosjoki River.

➡️  “The World Tree Camp Volunteer Campus” is a step in Nickel's global  transition to postindustriality. The main focus of the campus was the  connection of eco and urban volunteers to create a comfortable  recreational area near the bridge to Sobachka Mount.

“The  realization comes to us that the quality of life directly depends on the ecology of the place where we live! The volunteer campus drew attention  to the collection and disposal of household waste accumulated on the  territory for decades. The first step has been taken. Our task is not to stop and go further in terms of putting things in order in our common  house,” said Andrey Fomenko, the director of “The Second School” Center.

The results

Based on the efforts of the two weeks work, we received impressive results:

- took out 156 tires from the river;
- collected almost two tons of metallic waste;
- collected and sorted waste in the riverbank area;
- took out a full truck of non-recyclable waste;
- the bridge was asphalted and repainted;
- installed a bench with rotating elements and sitting benches;
- installed an art object "Negotiations pipe";
- installed 3 optical filters for photos;
- a riverbank and the amphitheater staircase were improved;
- created an art park "White Stone" at Sobachka Mount.

Many residents were inspired by the activities of the volunteers and provided support. The local waste disposal operator Yuri Leonidovich Bazanov took out non-recyclable materials free of charge, and Smart SREDA Murmansk delivered eco lamellas made of recycled plastic for benches. All tires were taken for recycling by LLC "Murmansk Regional Center for Integrated Utilization".

We thank the volunteers of “The World Tree Camp” for their work, we wish you strength and good luck! 🤗

Today is the best day to create our future!

Campus organizer is “The Second School” Center with the support of “Nornikel”.
